This is baby Frydek, and I have some concern about him. The first picture of is of him now; my concern is that his lower leaves are drooping. The second picture is of him around the beginning of January, and he’s much more erect, than now. I know he’s not overwatered, and he’s in part sun/part shade for light. So, what’s his problem? Is he growing so fast he can’t keep his stems up straight? Any ideas? TIA!

If he’s indoors then everything is indirect light. He may need more. These guys need even more light than an average alocasia because the white isn’t contributing. If you haven’t had him long then this could be normal alocasia behavior. When I buy one, I assume I will likely lose all of those leaves over the next few months. If the roots and stem are healthy they’ll be replaced with bigger, happier leaves. If you’ve had him a while then he might need a repot. Also worth noting that alocasia naturally go dormant when conditions aren’t good for them. So if your place is cold and/or dry it could be heading that direction. These guys are so beautiful and so dramatic, so it’s hard to give just one answer. The most important thing is that as long as the stem and proximal roots stay healthy, you have a viable plant that will bounce back from whatever it is.

K has some great points, I also know that Wolfen uses and suggest silica (think that’s right) for plants like these and it helps strengthen their growth if nothing else is the problem

The lowering leaves is a common problem. Several of mine do it. I have researched and talked to people but absolutely no one has a definitive answer. I get everything from too much light to not enough light, needs fertilizer, too much water, not enough water. I have done everything I know to correct the issue but once they are lower, they stay there. They do not straighten up. In the pics you will see the plants with lowered stems. I have four plants in there so I could deal with the issue in unison. Plenty of light which they seem to be handling fine. And a humidifier one foot away. Most of the leaves look healthy even if they are lowered. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is just a habit of the plant.

Did you run this by something like ChatGPT, or any other site like that? It is so disturbing to see my Frydek look like this, with most of his stems hanging down, like he’s having a bad day. If you figure this out, please give me a heads up; I’d really like to know what’s going on with these guys. TXS so much for all of your info; I really appreciated it!

I’ve done online research, asked on a few subs on Reddit, asked my plant shop owner, and other plant people. Many people think they have the answer but it doesn’t work out.

I also added silica supplement to their regimen. And I use a highly recommended fertilizer.

The only common denominator I can come up with is that I use a fairly chunky gritty soil mix. It’s my own doing. They never wilt, they just droop. I’ve had a Polly for about a year and an old leaf is just now starting to sag, but it’s also turning yellow. So I’m assuming it’s end of time for that leaf. Also have a small Jacklyn that has one leaf starting to droop. I’ve already decided that I’m not getting any more Alocasias.
