This is a follow-up to an earlier post. My peperomia had spider mites, I’ve treated once with neem oil. Now it has black, mushy spots on this tips of some of the leaves. Seems like she’s getting worse. I watered yesterday according to schedule. It’s on my back covered porch, getting indirect sun. Any ideas? Thank you.

What soil do you have it in? Peperomias are prone to root rot so they need really well draining soil (I know some people use cactus soil).

I’ve heard a rule of thumb, that when the tips of the leaves are bad the tips of the roots are bad

It is a generic kind of potting soil but I do have a mixture of coco peat and garden soils I could use to transplant.

If it’s generic, it’s most likely holding onto to much moisture and slowly suffocating the roots, leading to root rot. I’d repot it with chunky, well draining soil, and possibly downsize the pot (depending on how many roots there are). When you repot, check the roots and cut off any rotten ones, and then spray the rest of the roots with hydrogen peroxide to kill any remaining bacteria.

Thank you so much! I will do it now. Would you say the same treatment could apply to my philodendron? She’s not well, either, same kind of symptoms, including the mites.

I have my philos in well draining soil as well (about 50/50 potting soil to perlite) so it could help if it’s in regular potting soil.

Thank you for your help. I repotted her yesterday. I was shaking in my boots. Hoping that will make her happy again.

Are you watering on a regular schedule or watering only when it needs water?

I was watering on a regular schedule which said only once a month but the soil was so dry I went ahead and watered again. Maybe I overwatered her. I repotted her, too, with 50:50 Miracle Grow indoor plant mix and coco coir, peat & perlite mix. Sprayed 3:1 hydrogen peroxide on roots. No evidence of root rot. Whew. I also added moss poles, thinking the aerial roots may like it. The stems are so heavy, they just droop.
