I received this butterfly bush last year as a gift. It was just a small plant in a small maybe 6 inch container and it’s turned to this in a year! It’s definitely outgrown this garden so I’d like to move it. When is the best time, and how exactly do I go about it?

The best time to transplant is in early spring as soon as the weather is warm enough to not damage the roots. Buddleia plants need about a 6 ft diameter space if you don’t trim them. I would trim it back severely before autumn, leaving 2 ft stems, so it will grow new branches in spring and take the stress off the root system when you are ready to move it. Trimming before spring will also make more sections to produce flowers. Take plenty of extra soil around the roots to cause less root damage when you dig up the bush. . Dig the new hole twice as large for root growth. Till the soil and prep the new location by adding additives such as mulch/compost/vermiculite for sandy fast drying soil, add perlite/batch chips for slow draining soil. I also work in manure. Then, cover the area with mulch to deter weeds until ready to transplant. 🪴🍀
