Plant Mama

I have a general question to ask. I live in Ontario, Canada. Right now we're in the winter months and since it's very cold the heat is running nonstop. And because of that the house has become very dry. We have a humidifier on our furnace and 2 humidifiers on the main level. I have a hygrometer in every room (plants in every room). The readings show normal humidity and approximately 70-75° Fahrenheit. My question is that my plants are really dry, sticking my fingers down at least 3" still dry. I have been watering a lot more, the water soaks right in. But am I over watering them? I'm not sure as I've never had this problem before. I also have picked up the pots and they don't seem heavier. I would appreciate any advice you can give me on watering, not watering, standing on my head. Lol

I live in Alberta so heat is on constant too, I’ve been finding I’m watering more often too. As long as you’re checking the soil moisture before watering I doubt you’re overwatering :) Some of my plants seem to be even thirstier now than they’ve been in the summer!

Exactly. I'm watering every 4 days now. And I check dryness first. Thanks.

Im in Toronto. The humidity in my house is 32% these days. Some of my plants dry up a lot quicker. I give them a good soak. Let them sit in the water for 30-60mins. I find sometimes if they get too dry, they get hydrophobic and you’re not actually watering. Just gotta be more careful and really check the pot before watering.

This is pretty common when heating is on, you can either make a more water holding substrate mix, or bottom water your plants for a while, as they tend to soak up more water that way

Unfortunately it’s tough to make a substrate for winter weather and repot every season. If you get your watering down right shouldn’t be a problem. Wait till the substrate is dry throughout. My problem with bottom watering especially in the winter, is that if you don’t water properly the bottom of the pot will stay wet and cause root rot. Most will stick their finger in a bit and water if dry. Most don’t use a chunky airy mix.

Also in Ontario and am in same boat! Some of my plants that could go without water for 2+ weeks in the summer now need water every 5 days. Took me awhile to clue in, I couldn’t figure out why so many plants were dropping lower leaves 🍃

Thanks for the comments everyone. As we speak I've checked some plants and they're completely dry. Will water but not too much. New house, new learning curve.
