Help! I got this as a gift from my husband about 2 years ago. When he got it the roots were already exposed. Is that an issue? He was told it’s not but I question that. Is now a good time to replant it? Any and all suggestions are welcomed! And if you suggest repotting how much bigger of a pot should I use? And as you can see it’s by the A/C and heat is that okay? Is its distance to the window good? TIA

If you haven't repotted it in 2 years I'd definitely say it's time for some fresh soil. You don't need a much larger sized pot. I'd probably go up at least an inch in size. Personally I'd put a air deflector on the vent so that it's blowing away from the window. 😊

I have a plant like that! If it has thrived there for 2 years next to the vent, it obviously isn’t bothered by it. They definitely let you know when they don’t like something. It probably does need a repot but whether to increase pot size depends on how root logged it is. Just make sure it is getting proper humidity. It looks pretty healthy! I would clip the tie that has the stems bound though.

Thank you. I will clip that. I’m so nervous about replanting this because it was given as a gift during a very difficult time in my life and if it goes badly I’ll feel terrible but- I guess at least I have this community to ask and I can address it before it gets out of control. Thank you. 😊

I would repot. You want to go about two inches bigger pot than the one your plant is in now. Gives it more room to grow without overwhelming it.

Thank you. Wish me luck! I am hoping to repot it today. ☺️

Also, it’s usually okay if some surface roots are showing—the real danger is burying the bottom of the trunk, that opens it up to rot. Often over time soil will wash away and uncover some roots, you can toss a handful of fresh soil on at that point or frankly just leave it.

Thank you. It’s good to know to be cautious of covering the trunk. Makes sense but I had no idea. ☺️
