It’s a reference to the TV show Vampire Diaries — in the show vervain is toxic to the vampires and townspeople add it to drinks so that vampires can’t drink their blood or ‘compel’ them (use mind control).

Oh, gotcha. I’ve heard of the show but never watched it. It’s interesting that in the show it’s a vampire vaccine because vervain actually has historical references of being sacred & warding off evil! You can read below if you’d like. I copied & pasted. • Greece and Rome: Known as herba sacra or the "holy herb," ancient peoples used vervain sprigs to sweep and purify temple altars. Roman soldiers carried it for protection, and messengers wore it in boughs to signal peaceful intent. • Celtic Druids: Druids held the plant in supreme reverence, using it to bless sacred spaces and open rituals. Medicinal and Folk Traditions • The "Heal-All": Classical physicians like Hippocrates and Pliny the Elder documented vervain for treating everything from fevers and wounds to snakebites. • Medieval "Simpler's Joy": During the Middle Ages, monks grew the plant in monastery gardens (Verbena officinalis). Herbalists used it as a nervous system restorative, digestive tonic, and charm against evil spirits.
