I have been a previous plant killer and I am trying to reform myself and connect with my new daughter in love who is a lover of all things plants. Well for my birthday in May, she gave me this plant. Why do I feel like I am killing it? I seriously thought this was one of the easiest plants to grow and here look at me…the leaves are curling, it looks limp. I watered it, sat it in water to bottom water…what do I do to keep it alive??? The soil is moist on top and wet on the bottom. I’m new to this app and it is so confusing to me. It’s making me self diagnose and I have no clue.

How often are you watering her and what kind of light is she getting?

I watered her on Wednesday and I sat her in the water with some drizzled on top. I am a failure already…I know it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not a failure! Plants can be finicky! Make sure the excess water drains from her and water when the top 1-2 inches are dry! What kind of light are you giving her?

Ok, I’ll take it out of water to let the bottom dry out. It’s by a southwest facing window. The window typically get lots of sunlight however we put window tint to help with the cooling. Could that be a problem?

Use a soil with lots of perlite and preferably without peat moss. The soil looks muddy. Overwatering can cause the limp look as well as too low lighting. Move it closer to a window or add a grow light. Fertilize regularly. I add SuperThrive Plant Vitamins to the fertilizer water. You can add rooting hormone powder to the new soil mix to boost the root growth. 🪴🍀

Thank you. I wondered if the soil was a factor. It’s in a basic miracle grow potting soil.

Both soil and your watering routine can be a factor. Overwatering happens when the plant is left in water too long, m watered too often, or the drainage/drying is too slow. Bottom watering is to place the pot in water until the top soil is moist and not soaking wet. Then, it’s important to remove the pot from the water and thoroughly drain the excess water or the roots will rot. Standard Miracle Gro has peat moss that holds too much water Pothos is tropical and does better in well draining soil with lots of aggregates like perlite, clay chips, lava rock chips, etc. Even adding orchid bark chips and coconut husk chunks can help drainage and aeration. You can use Miracle Gro by amending it with lots of the materials mentioned.🪴🍀

If depends how close to the window it is, if it’s almost touching it could be radiating heat and you can put your hand between it and see if it’s super warm. I’d start out with letting it dry out then if that doesn’t fix the problem I’d try moving her further away from the window.

Thank you so much for your advice. I feel horrible that I can’t get it to grow more than 2 leaves. 🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s okay! I killed plenty of plants while I was learning. Make sure she’s not close to an AC vent either! Plants can be finicky

Ok…she’s definitely not but I’ll make sure she’s kept clear of any vents.

You will do great because you’re reaching out for help. They don’t require to much to survive. They don’t care to have to much water, and do well in medium light. Check her roots and trim off any thing that is mushy. Repot in a dryer soil. I typically water mine about once every two weeks. If the leaves start dropping, she’s thirsty. Just water till it runs out the bottom of the pot. Then put her back in her spot near some light. You could even try a grow light bulb. Just screw it in your lamp and put her next to it. You can do this and make your daughter in love proud! 👍🏻
