Plant Lives Matter

Oh my gosh, I’m so excited! It’s been like a year and a half since my Thai Constellation grew a new leaf! I was starting to think maybe he was dying. Has anyone had this issue before? I never did check the roots after my last repot, but they appear to be growing because the soil is higher than the rim of the pot. Gets PLENTY of sunlight.

Lol you Thai is like, “Hey listen, some of us are just late bloomers. But we’re always worth the wait.” Mine had a slow start when I first planted it from propagations, but a year and half without growth seems really long. When was the last repot? Have you been fertilizing? How do you check moisture level and how often do you water?

There were a few ‘shock’ events that preceded the non-growth period. After its last leaf, I repotted it, so that was about a year ago. Then we moved to a new place with much more light in June. Noticing the non-growth, I moved it around the apartment to figure out the right light. I also tried dialing up and down on the water. I used a moisture meter and I eventually settled on letting the soil get pretty dry. Fertilized up to winter I think. Still nothing. After all that I was just like 🤷‍♂️ I’m just going to let it do whatever it wants to do, either grow or die. So maybe it just wanted to get used to its new situation? Every time I changed it, it didn’t have enough time to acclimate? Maybe it went into a kind of dormancy for the winter?

Mine has been doing the same thing but it is a crème brûlée Monstera and I wonder if it needs even more light😭😂😂

i think it's just a monstera thing. i've gotten only 2 leaves in the 9 months i've had mine 🙄 it's right in front of a west window and i even maintain the humidity for her. they're just drama queens i think

If you don’t fertilize monthly growth will be extremely slow but it might have just been using energy for root growth before all of the growth you’ll see now from spring through summer!

Oh this makes a certain kind of sense, especially being that I sized up the pot when I repotted a year ago. I’ve seen pictures of some in the wild that have roots for days! So first it wants the roots, then once it thinks has enough, it puts out the leaves. Fingers crossed it puts out many leaves this year!

Sure enough, Google has all the answers: “If your Monstera is not producing new leaves, it is likely investing energy into strengthening its root system below the surface.” And, “Monsteras enter a semi-dormant or resting phase during winter, characterized by a significant slowing of growth.” So for me, it was probably first one, then the other.
