I need help with my amaryllis plant. I received my first one this plant as a gift in December 2022. In January 2023 it bloomed 4 different stalks at the same time. It was breathtaking. Then as the year went on it grew leaves a few times but last fall it stopped doing anything but I kept watering & fertilizing it on schedule and nothing happened. I was about to give up on it but in late February leaves began appearing. I was soooo excited. Now those leaves are basically dead. Here’s my dilemma, do I cut them off now? Or wait till they fall off? Then when the leaves are gone how do I get it to bloom again. Here are a couple of pictures. One from Jan 2023 in bloom and one from right now. Please don’t just like my post help me out too!!!! Thanks so much a wondering Amaryllis parent. 😁☺️

Soooo…here’s the thing about amaryllis. They are much like many of the flowering plants you can buy at the grocery store. They will bloom big and fast when they’re planted and watered, produce seeds if they’re pollinated, then die back to their bulbs. They are really not meant to be houseplants because they’re not tropical plants that are generally active year round. They evolved to bloom with the change of seasons outdoors. They think when they are planted that it’s spring, so that’s why they flower. When it dies back to the bulb, it’s actually storing up energy that will be released after what it thinks is the next winter. You can cut off anything that wilts or turns brown to help it conserve energy. And yes, you can actually get this to bloom again without waiting a long time by sticking it in the freezer for a bit. It’ll overwinter and when you take it out and thaw it, it should flower again with whatever energy it has. I’m not sure how long it takes to overwinter, but I’m sure googling around would get you results. It should be said that I think each bulb will only flower 2 or 3 times. They generally just want to produce seeds so the next generation lives on. Good luck!

Why thank you that’s more information than I’ve ever been given before. I live in Southern New Hampshire and we’re going into our spring now. Should I put it in the freezer now or do plant it outside now? Any thoughts on that???? Again thank you for taking the time to really answer my questions. 😁

Yeah, glad to help! I will say, I don’t have a lot of experience with this personally, but I’ve seen it done. Theoretically, you should be able to to plant it outside and it will grow again next spring. It won’t flower again until it thinks winter has come and gone again. My husband wanted to plant the amaryllis that we had outside but he didn’t do it right. It hasn’t bloomed again. Pretty sure it died 😂 I guess if you’d like to see it flower again soon, try sticking it in the freezer! I’m more adventurous with plants than most people, but I’d recommend researching a bit online to see what successes others have had.
