I’m thinking of cutting this beauty down. I’ve done everything I can think of to get her healthy and nothing is working. She’s just not bouncing back. I have no problems cutting to make plants more beautiful, and who doesn’t want more plants. If anyone can give me advice on what to do I’d appreciate that. 🤔

Check for pests before you cut it, the damage looks like it could be thrips or maybe a bacterial problem, would be sad if you cut it back and it didn’t bounce back well

I’m dealing with fungus gnats, but that’s a headache all the time. That spot right there just formed but it is also an old leaf. No thrips thank gods! Maybe I’ll give a good couple weeks spray of neem oil??

I totally get it with the fungal gnats, I’ve just accepted that I will never get rid of them! Maybe double check the roots to make sure it’s not bacterial. Otherwise a nice neem shower sounds good and a trim may do the plant well!

Mix 4 tablespoons of mosquito bits into 1 gallon of water and water your plants with this solution every *single* watering. It’s been my only method of completely ridding them of my home and I have 104 plants. Thank me later 🤗 The mark on the leaf looks potentially like fungal rot on the stem or roots. I would unpot, wash away her soil, and cut back any decay with a sanitized scissor. Put her roots/rot points in 1/4 3% hydro peroxide and 3/4 water for 5 mins if you’ve cut off rot, then replant in chunky soil. Cut off the damaged leaf. Let me know what you find!

I’m already locked and loaded with that stuff. It’s a never-ending cycle. I actually just did a nematode treatment last month. My jaw hit the floor when I saw those gnats again. I’m digging my heels in getting moss poles but I’ve read they can give extra nutrients. When I repotted her probably 3 weeks ago, because of my error, her roots were good.

I totally get that but this is usually caused by user error. It also took me a bit to get results in the beginning, I was watering too regularly but learned as I went. I would water the plants only once a week with the solution making sure to cover all the soil completely. If you’re doing it correctly, it’s impossible for the fungus gnats to produce viable offspring.

One thing I have learned about Monsteras and with white variation is that if you’re having issues, it’s usually overwatering, too big of a pot, or too bright of a light! I use a chunky mix! I use naked root planters! I only use distilled water! Feed with every watering! Keep in my dining room, which is a low indirect light and I put a low grow light on them! I have one Monstera Albo that came very damaged in shipping, but she is bouncing back has already given me three and soon to be before leaves in the last five months Ish!

Those naked root pots are pricey, I go above and beyond for my plants but I can’t pay that much for a pot. I will definitely get the distilled water. I have a grow light over it. It’s a loud 2 feet away. I will definitely incorporate the feeding, I may have started that already actually? How long did it take for it to bounce back? I’m probably being impatient. Thanks

You have a highly variegated monstera. The brown patches are a very common issue. In my research, a possible theory is that because of the weakness of the variegated areas, any minor stress can create the brown spots. A silica supplement can help strengthen the plant cells and prevent this from happening. It’s not a cure but should lessen the possibility. If you plan to try the silica, look for the type that does not require a waiting time before adding fertilizer and other supplements. It’s more expensive but more convenient.
