My staghorn fern was about 6 inches tall when I got it about eight years ago. I’ve repotted it twice. And no, I’ve never put it on driftwood for fear it wouldn’t make it. I’m reaching out because now I’m trying to decide what to repot it in. One side of it seems to be dying yet if you look closely there are little babies. Does anyone have any experience with staghorn ferns and could offer me some opinions about what to do next?
I started with one on driftwood, hung it outside on a tree and, frankly, it’s done better since I repotted it. (3rd pic) I used Molly’s aroid potting soil, some lava stones, and a handful of sphagnum moss, chopped up, and orchid bark. Before that I planted some in coconut planters. I mixed my own soil: 1 part regular potting soil, 1 part perlite and 1 part orchid chips (not the soil, just the chips). They are thriving. (First two pics) So far better than the one transplanted into the aroid mix but it’s only been a week so hard to know that for sure. I should note that they are outside, under shade trees, in USDA zone 9a. Good luck! They are so cool.
I put mine into this wooden basket. I watched a lady on youtube with one, when she repotted, she literally just put the whole thing into another larger basket. Ive not yet gotten to the point of needing to repot, but mine has been growing really well. Shes also got babies sprouting everywhere
