Please help!! I got this Calathea Orbifola not too long ago but it has been struggling. I was told to check for spider mites but I didn’t see any webbing. One leaf is turning yellow towards the base of the leaf and it started to grow a new leaf but that is turning brown at the tip. What is happening?? I change the water with filtered water about once a month and keep it in indirect medium-bright light with the help of a grow light. The grow light stays on for about 13-14 hours a day (like a normal day in spring/summer). I recently moved it further away to prevent burns. The roots looked fine when I got it but when I looked at it closer, there was a lot of brown goo that I ended up cutting off to help the plant. Are the white roots just new or are they the healthy ones?? 🤔

White roots are new. It could be that the water is too cold. During winter this can happen. If it’s been growing hydroponically this whole time with no issues then I’d say water temp is too cold. If you just put it in water it’s going to take time to readjust and grow roots meant for water-growth. You will probably have die-off during that time.

Thank you!! I bought it in the hydroponic and I’m not sure how long it has Ben in there.

this looks like chlorine sensitivity. most pitcher filters leave some amount of chlorine, which is why i usually recommend filtering and treating tap water with aquarium water conditioner. i like the api brand

if there were mushy brown roots, it could’ve been rot. you may have caught it in time as it was affecting your plant. as long as it’s continuously growing, you’ve cut it off and providing oxygen (through fresh water), there should be new growth!
