I use one for my ivy and I only put water in the bottom when I need to water, I don’t keep water in the pot all of the time but it does help get water to all parts of the soil instead of leaving some dry spots

I haven’t put water in it in a week and the top soil is still pretty wet but I’m wondering if I should or not

definitely don’t water if the soil is wet. even water-loving plants should only be watered once the top inch or so of soil has dried. what species of plant are you asking about here?

      It’s a birds nest fern!

i don’t like self-watering planters at all personally, i find the soil stays wet too long if used as intended. i would recommend using them as sparky suggested, as a bottom-watering device, keep the reservoir empty unless your plant needs water.

I put my pothos in them. If you water from the top, you’ll get dirty water in the bottom and it’s not as nice looking. However, the roots have grown through the bottom into the bottom part and turns the water green. I’m not sure I’d use them again for that
