Can anyone help me identify the kind of bugs in my nifty new bug catcher? This would help me with proper eradication. Thanks🙏🏻(zoom in for a better look)

Mosquito bites I heard bottom watering helps from other planta parents.
1 Like1st they are usually around because of over watering & rot so cut back on watering obviously depends on the plant because some prefer to dry out before watering . I’ve been trying to deal with this myself & at the moment it’s pretty good but I’m also doing systemic pest control . Basically when you add this the plant sucks up the solution & makes the plant poisonous to the bugs when they eat the plant they die . It’s good for a lot of pests not just the gnats .

Mix diatomaceous earth into the top layer of soil… that normally eradicates them for me

I haven’t heard that one before for fungus gnats - thank you! I WILL TRY ANYTHING.

It even works outside. My husband made me a raised garden bed and the fungus gnats were definitely using it as a breeding ground and swarming it. Mixed the diatomaceous earth and they are all gone.

It’s also safe for humans and pets… if I can use something that doesn’t require chemicals I am going to do it

For sure! Natural and safe solutions are ideal!
0 LikesI water my plants with my own water mix (mosquito dunk and water soaked for 12-24 hours). It takes awhile but I promise in a few months you will be gnat free. I only encounter gnats when I bring new plants home. Use sticky to get the older gnats, the water kills the babies in the soil!
0 Likesi used systemic houseplant insect control and also made a solution of rubbing alcohol, water and dawn dish soap, soaked the first inch of dirt with it. always gets rid of them
0 LikesTo keep fungus gnats under control, I add mosquito bits to my watering can and let it soak into the water. You can also get Captain Jack’s dead bug brew and mix that in with the watering as well, or spray onto the leaves and soil. I also keep some yellow/sticky fly paper around to catch the adults. I think there is also a way to control the population/ward them away by cleaning off leaves and spraying soil with an insecticidal soap. You can buy or mix at home with common ingredients like: water, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Castile soap (NOT dish soap), and combos of peppermint, tea tree oil, etc. I also sprinkle cinnamon on to the top of the soil as I’ve read it keeps fungus gnats and other pests away as most insects dislike cinnamon, peppermint, lemongrass/citronella type scents. Lastly, bottom watering plants can help keep fungus gnats down as they are attracted to and lay eggs in moist soil conditions. By bottom watering you are preventing them from getting into wet top soil too easily.
