Any help would be greatly appreciated…I’ve been trying for months to figure out what’s causing these brown, dry tips to form on nearly every leaf (new and established) of my African Mask ‘Mandalay’. NOTE: 1) I follow the watering guidelines on Planta (have also researched watering instructions online to ensure accuracy), 2) fertilizing via fertilizer sticks, and 3) located near a window that gets plenty of sunlight.

It could be the water you’re using or a lack of humidity. What’s the humidity near the plant? Calatheas like high humidity, ideally 60% and above. Also calatheas like filtered, distilled or rainwater. Tap water has minerals salts and chlorine that build up and cause the tips to burn and curl

Thanks! I never considered either of those. I have a separate room for my “high humidity” plants (humidifier and hygrometer for monitoring). I’ll give both suggestions a try. 👍🏽

It’s a lack of humidity. I’ve seen this everywhere on planta and it’s the fact that the environment around the plant is too dry. You could try getting a humidifier or misting it and that should keep it healthy.

Thanks! I should’ve considered the humidity factor as I imagine it’s in the same “family” as my Amazonian Elephant’s Ear (kept in a room with a humidifier). 🤦🏽‍♂️

I fill my water can and let it sit out over night and it’s helped my brown tipped plants. The new growth is not crispy brown. Many plants like filtered water or tap water that’s sat out a bit.

Thanks! I’ll give this a try before loading up on distilled water. 😎

With calathea it’s usually the hard minerals in tap water that cause these burnt tips. I wouldn’t mist, the risks aren’t worth it to me, but a humidifier in the area could help.

Thanks! I’m starting by addressing the tap water & humidity issue…we’ll see what happens. 🤓
