I need advice on my bird of paradise. She was one of my first plants, earlier this year when I was a total amateur. I’d say I’m more beginner now. So we faced many issues together. First, there used to be 2 in this pot. I didn’t have her in enough light, and she got root rot bad. I cleaned up her (and her sisters roots) and repotted. I put her on my back porch for more light and heat/humidity (hot summer months at that time). Sister plant died. She dropped many leaves, but somehow made it. She got two new leaves, was doing well. Shortly after this, spider mites. I treated. I cleaned her. I treated again. I’m *pretty sure* they are now gone. I’m at the point now it’s getting colder out and she needs to come inside. I have not repotted, checked roots, I’m honestly scared to touch her. Which brings me to my question: what do I do now 🥲

Wintering plants is one of my LEAST favorite activities to do. I joke with my friends that it’s the only reason I agreed to move down south. Put her by a sunny window. Dust leaves weekly to make sure they’re able to get the light they need. If you feel like the window isn’t enough light, a grow light might be a good investment. The hardest part is trying to make sure your plant doesn’t get too stressed out. Check the roots, try to replicate the environment your baby likes. (heat, humidity, light levels) I never see winter as a time to repot, but if she’s still in her nursery pot, you might want to do that NOW rather than midwinter. Good luck!

Do you recommend any certain type or brand of grow light? There so just so many out there I want to make sure I’m buying a good one

Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m the person to ask. You might want to ask another group, I’m sure they’d be able to help!

If you feel up to it a repot would be good good the plant. The soil is cracking a little which is a sign of not chunky enough soil. Maybe try to get ingredients for a chunky tropical mix and repot in the next month. Also maybe try to move the stem to the middle of the pot for equal root development.

I do have some lava rocks and orchid bark handy. Would this be good to add in? Or do you recommend something else?

Those materials are perfect, I recommend mixing them into your soil for better drainage. Ive added the list I always use for my tropical houseplant below. - 2 parts indoor potting soil (most brand are fine you can just go to a local gardening center and ask for the good soil and get a small bag) - 1 part perlite - 1/2 part coco coir - 1/2 part orchid bark - 1/2 part lava rocks - 1/2 part charcoal (optional but helps give your plant nutrients) - 1/2 part pumice (also optional but helps with drainage) Hope this helps!!!

I’m at that level where I just have soil mixing ingredients on hand, I feel like it’s easier and cheaper then buying a single soil mix for each type of plant
