Hello community! My fiddle leaf fig and I could use your help with diagnosis. Here are the facts: • The lower leaves on two of the three mature stalks are gradually fading in color (loss of chlorophyll?) and developing brown spots. • They’re taking their sweet, sweet time dropping. • I’ve observed this problem (mainly the fading color) gradually developing since the Spring, so I repotted the plant sometime in the summer, into a custom mixed super chunky soil with coco coir. • In the fall, I observed signs of spider mites as all my baby leaves were either dying and falling off, or growing out scarred. After a shower and frequent misting, I think we’re in the clear on that front. • The plant is directly in front of a window and may be exposed to some winter gusts that seep through the crevices. • I follow the Planta watering schedule and double check that the soil is mostly dry before watering, opting to water less than more. Any insight would be super appreciated! I inherited this plant from a friend 4 years ago and have been so delighted to watch it grow as big and bushy as it has. I’d be so devastated to see it die on me now ):

Similar situation also happened with mine and it was a combination of spider mites/not enough light/underwatering/low humidity. I think the humidity was the least pressing concern overall but adding a humidifier can support a fiddle leaf fig, especially during winter months. As you probably know, Fiddle leaf figs love lots and lots of light, so adding a grow light or moving it to a brighter window would probably be the best first step. I’d also check for spider mites again to be sure, especially since it’s dropping leaves. Lack of light would explain the lowest leaves pale fading colors and should make a big difference. Adding a humidifier should help with the browning leaves as well, but it’s also possible that the crispy brown edges are a result of slight underwatering, which isn’t a big deal- better to go under than over. I’d water when the potting mix is 75% dry rather than 100% dry during the winter to make sure.

Oh those are such helpful insights, thank you! I’ll be sure to give her another shower next time she’s due for a watering and will order a grow light to support her during the winter. She’s in front of an east facing window so she only really gets a good amount of sun in the morning and the waning daylight must be hard on her, I’m sure. Keeping the humidifier going on high for sure!

yeah in that case I would definitely agree that it needs more light! I forgot to mention this but if you’re worried about the cold draft from the windows, I sealed mine off with just some clear packaging tape for the winter months- not handyman approved 😅 but it did help!
