Baby Plant Person

Hi! So I found this girl in the garbage area of my apartment and I didn’t want to just let her get thrown away so I grabbed her. She’s a good size but a little droopy. I gave her a good water yesterday but she didn’t perk up. I want to repot but I’m not sure what size to get. This is my first time really taking care of a plant other than a succulent so any advice is appreciated!

She looks beautiful (if a little tired 😁), good on you for rescuing her! When you want to repot, just go one size up from the current pot (so, if this pot is 6 inches, go up to 7 or 8 inches). Check out the roots when you take her out to make sure none are dead or damaged (and also check for any pests, of course). Give her a little time to acclimate to your home and she should be good! Good luck 💜😊.

Thank you! I think I’m going to wait a few days before trying to repot to hopefully get her a little stronger before stressing her the heck out 😅 thanks for the advice on the pot!

Not a bad idea! Also, HELLO to the kitty I spy in the first pic 👀 😆

She says hello back! My girl, Beef, was investigating the new addition but thankfully not too interested haha

I would check for pests, definitely needs a larger pot—I saw you said you’re going to wait a little to repot, which I 100% agree with. I’d probably do a hydrogen peroxide water, as well. Make sure she gets a good amount of light (mine gets direct light and she absolutely loves it) I don’t know how you feel about self-watering pots, but once I switched my BOP to one, she started to grow like crazy!

(I meant to add this) as for pot size, I have mine in this one (12.5x14). Yours looks like it would do well in that size but I could be wrong. If you could get a measure on the diameter of the pot she’s in right now, I’d be happy to help a little better lol

Ah pests I didn’t even think of those. I’ll look into the hydrogen peroxide solution. What part of the plant should it be used on? The roots? I moved her to my window after reading that BOP need good sunlight. Gotta get her that good good sun I never thought about self watering pots, but it might be good to look into. I don’t want to kill her after fishing her out of the trash 😅 the pot is around 12 inches so a 14 inch pot is what I’ll need? Thank you for the advice!

For hydrogen peroxide watering, I measure it by 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 5 parts water (I usually do 1 cup hydrogen to 5 cups water.) Hydrogen peroxide waterings will also help aerate the roots. The hydrogen peroxide water mix is used to water the plant. Don’t do it too frequently. I only do it when getting a new plant, if I suspect pests, or when I bring my plants inside for the winter. For pest prevention/treatment I also spray my plants down with neem oil when I get a new plant, suspect pests, or when I bring my plants inside for the winter. This is the brand I use by Bonide Captain Jack’s, a lot of people like their products! You can get it on amazon, Home Depot, etc! I just spray my plants down with it, and I spray it on the soil, or mix it into the water before you water your plants! For the size of the pot, I since it’s already in a similar-sized pot I have. You mentioned not wanting to repot just yet, and I fully agree unless her roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot! I wouldn’t repot her just yet, it’ll gives her some time to adjust to her new environment. I’d try to wait, at most, 2 months if you can. I’d get a 14-16 inch pot. When getting a larger pot, a good key to go by is 2 inches larger per repot!

A lot of spelling/grammatical errors in my comment, my bad lol! I wish we had an edit option 😭

Oh my goodness you are the best! Okay peroxide watering is going to happen next time it’s time for watering. And neem oil that will also be happening, thank you for the picture! Oh two months okay! I thinking sooner but waiting will definitely be better. Ah thank you so much for all of your advice! I’m so thankful 🥹

If this is a Bird of Paradise, they often have mealy bugs so I’d check for those. Also, for a plant that was watered yesterday, that top soil looks pretty dry. How did you water her? She does look like she’s seen better days, but I’m sure it’s nothing that BRIGHT LIGHT, regular watering, and regular feeding won’t fix! Wise of you to let her get acclimated to your space before stressing her out. That’s what I would do, too, in addition to pest treating her so she doesn’t get the other babies sick…

Oh yeah you’re right she does look pretty dry. I tried to soak the shit out of her. She’s still in the nursery pot so I put her in a shallow bucket, watered the shit out of her, and waited like 20 minutes before dumping out the excess water in the bucket. There’s a layer of this weird stringy stuff on top that I’ll remove after I get off work. I didn’t get a good look but the soil still looks pretty dry??

Strange if you soaked it and the top soul was still dry…. 🤔
