Hey yall! Just a PSA. I totally understand that people are just trying to help on here. However, I have seen lots of incorrect advice being given that is actually detrimental to peoples plants and collections. Please do not give advice unless you are absolutely sure that that is the problem or that your solution will help. Or if you are intent on giving your advice, maybe add a disclosure. I have personally been given bad advice from the experts on planta (the ones you pay to message) and it cost me 15 plants. Before taking anyone’s advice, no matter how much of an expert they are please be sure to do your own research!

    Reddit, facebook groups, and just plain old google are great resources to fact check solutions and diagnosis!!! And remember even if peoples advice is wrong please be kind

    I think you assume too much if you think these user forums have plant experts. Even the paywall advice for paying subscribers won’t guarantee healthy plants with every advice. Eg., the Planta app watering notifications can kill off your plants if blindly followed without verifying the plant actually needs water. I have been on Planta less than 2 years and have never see anyone in the forum claim to be an expert. I’ve only seen the Planta moderators a couple of times commenting. They never claimed to be experts. Plus, experts have their own channels and websites that generate income. So, I assume comments are discussion topics and not a guarantee that your ailing plant will magically resurrect with this advice. It’s the responsibility of the plant owner to use caution. It’s the responsibility of the plant owner to get other opinions and recommendations either locally or online. No app, streaming site or article guarantees performance. The user forums shouldn’t be a place where each comment has to include a disclosure clause to “follow at your own risk.” It will start looking like a legal forum and will be less welcoming. Also, it’s unfair to blame an app or discussion forum if 15 of your plants don’t survive. Many variables can kill off a plant including user errors and the ailment that prompted you to post in the first place.☮️🪴

      You definitely misunderstood my post! No one is expecting anybody to be an expert, but I think unfortunately a lot of newbies on here mistake peoples advice for expert advice, including the Planta “Experts” that you can message/email. I think sometimes if we reread things and stop assuming that people have bad intentions we can save ourselves from typing paragraphs as excessive as this one!

      What rubbed me the wrong way is there is not one sentence where you take any responsibility for your 15 dead plants, or possibly not fully describing the issues/conditions or possibly incorrectly applying the expert advice given on Planta. It’s the bad advice the sole reason your 15 plants are dead is how it reads to me which prompted your Public Service Announcement. That’s the last I will comment on it.

      I think the upside to a forum is you do get several takes on it. And can approach with caution and do more into research on it. I do appreciate the peeps that caveat with "i don't have personal experience" or "I'm new to plants", I give my own caveat if I feel it's needed. But I'm not gonna post a bibliography lol

      Exactly!! you got this on the mark! That was my only point with this post, to remind people that not all advice is expert advice and to get second opinions and do your own research!

    I totally agree, and I think this is important to remember. I always try and include if it's personal experience or something I saw online or other factors
