I have two bird of paradise's, they used to thrive, but a family friend broke half of the stems on both so i have to cut them down, and they just haven't been the same. How do i get them to thrive again?

They will take a lot of time to bounce back completely, but they can do it. I would cut back any stems without leaves closer to the base to give more energy towards new growth and give them lots of bright light in a good window somewhere. Otherwise care for as you normally would and be ready to wait for several weeks before you see progress.
