   You have to attack the population of any pest at more than 1 point in the life cycles. If you only trap the adults and spray for adults then you miss the window where they lay eggs and then you’re just treating the fliers. If you spray and trap the adults you should also get something for the eggs or larvae. If you can attack 2/3 of the stages of their life you can effectively eradicate any pest. A lot of people online are starting to use insects to control their insects instead of sprays or traps as nothing works better than a natural born predator. There are companies that sell cards with these predatory insects eggs on them to hang on your plants. Green lacewing larvae are excellent for thrips, spider mites, mealy bugs, and white flies. Stratiolaelaps scimitus are great for eating the fungus gnat eggs and larvae while they’re in the soil. I know releasing bugs in your house sounds like the opposite of the solution but they don’t harm the plants and when there’s no more pests to hunt they either die off or try to leave

     With those the cards with bugs, do they stay in the plants or have the risk of getting out? I’m close to throwing the Alocasia away 😩

     They’re real live bugs once they hatch a from the eggs on the card so they can go wherever they please but the plants are the only real place inside your home that predatory bugs will wanna hang out. Once the food source dies off they’ll typically either starve and die off too or they’ll try and leave out an open window or door

   Your predatory insects will not go out into your house; they'll stay where their food is (your plants). They also tend to be pretty tiny, do you likely won't see them unless you look for them in your plant.

     Tbf, though, I've used nematodes and BT drops to kill gnats, which are literally microscopic and so not visible at all and not able to leave the pot/moss pole. If gnats are your only issue, concentrated drops like MicrobeLift (and letting your potting media dry) might be your best bet.

     Nematodes are great because they’ll eat almost any soil based pests, they can’t leave the soil, and they live there for 10-18 months

   I’ve used nematodes and that got rid of the gnats quickly. Purchased them online with other beneficial bugs for other issues(like spider mites). The beneficial bugs work better than any chemical treatment I have ever used. Changing your watering behavior is ultimately the solution to better soil health and less pests
