0 LikesI have a layer of sand above the soil on all of my plants, about half an inch will do. They cannot burrow through it to lay their eggs, and the larvae can’t escape to become adults. Completely interrupts their life cycle. I haven’t had gnats since I started doing this years ago.

0 LikesI top water my plants, the sand won’t hold the water and it will drain thru. What usually happens is where you pour the sand will be displaced and you’ll get a small hole. If you don’t pour in one spot you won’t get the divot. Either way you just fill it in when the sand dries a bit. I don’t refresh the sand, if I need to access the soil I just scoop it out with a spoon. I reuse it, but I don’t cross contaminate and will only use it with the plant it’s been used with before. The sand doesn’t really contribute nutrients, so as long as you don’t have pathogens I can’t think of a need to replace it frequently. After awhile the perlite and some of the soil will mix with the sand, but not so much to be an issue. After about a year or two (or when I repot) that’s when I change the sand.
