I have a snake plant that is having a weird struggle. There are sections of the leaf that are brown and drying out. I have repotted it in a better draining soil (bark, pearlite, short charcoal, coconut cor mix). The roots were healthy but there were not many roots, like 5… for a pretty large plant. No pests. Using filtered water. Is under a bright grow light. What exactly is going on with this snake plant?!

How long do you turn on the grow light every day? There are guides for grow lights for snake plants online (please go check em out) and if you are leaving them on for too long that might be why. Also a possibility might be that the soil is TOO well draining. I would advise you sit your snake plant in a tray with water up to 1/3 of the plants pot and let it soak in there for 15 minutes before taking it out to let the roots soak the water in more properly.

The grow light is on for 12 hours. It’s hanging out with my bird of paradise and Chinese evergreen so they get a lot of light. I’ll get myself better educated on grow light recommendations. I just started to add grow lights this year because my plants were super sluggish and I caved and admitted I do t have great light in my house. Thank you!!

Snake plants prefer indirect light. If the light is directly shining on it, that may be one issue. Also, I have read that some additives like the coco cor can lead to root problems. Snake plants do well in less complicated soil conditions. I would keep it simple. I have mine in potting soil with added perlite.

It’s not the grow light… I can tell you that much at least
