I got this money tree today and I can’t tell if this is scale or a part of the trunk.

Dip a tip in alcohol and wipe it off. If it doesn't wipe off its part of the trunk.

Probably just the trunk, lightly scrape with a toothpick, if it’s scale it will come off in one piece exactly as it was on the trunk.
