What should I do if my Christmas cactus has mold on it?? Is it dangerous? Why did it happen? It wasn’t there last time I watered. :(

The mold itself isn’t dangerous to the plant. It’s indicative of the soil retaining moisture. If you have the chance, you could try to repot with fresh soil mix that has more drainage. I usually add perlite and orchid bark to the standard indoor mix most hardware stores sell. Alternatively, you can scrape off the top part of the soil and keep an eye on it for now.

When I have had this happen, I’ve scraped off the top moldy layer. If you have essential oils around, the following are plant safe and anti-fungal: Peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, citronella, lemongrass, lavender, clove.. I put several drops of these essential oils in a spray bottle & then dilute with water, and I’ll spray that on the remaining soil to keep the mold at bay. You also just want to make sure you’re not overwatering!

I would repot it in terracotta because it doesn’t retain moisture and then use some chunky soil mix with dirt, or orchid bark and perlite!
