Alocasia Frydek Need advice! We’re down to almost one leaf- she sits in an east window, is weakly fertilized every watering (roughly every 2 weeks give or take) humidity is 55-70 with the humidifier,it’s in a chunky soil now I’m nervous to move it so semi hydro but I do have some LECA and could transfer. It also has a root on the top of the soil so maybe needs a repot? I’m so nervous to mess with her though! Is there something I’m missing? The most white leaf is new it just came in a week ago, and now the other one is getting floppy 🥺 no Pests visible

Alocasia can be finicky to no fault of your own. Some just seem to have it in their dna to only want to keep a few leaves at a time and not be a full huge plant like others unfortunately. The make corms in the soil that create new pups of your plant and sometimes if your plant is making a lot of those it is drawing a lot of energy and causing it to drop the leaves your seeing. If you repot you can see if there’s any you can remove and repot in stratum/perlite to make another frydek or you can leave them and they will eventually grow out of the dirt and fill up your plant. If you don’t want to do semi hydro I have found a lot of success using the naked root planters with mine.

Also young alocasias usually only hold 2-4 leaves at a time until they reach maturity.

I second the naked root planter comment lol. My frydek was doing the same thing. It would drop a leaf every time a new one came in. Switched to pon in a naked root planter and I’m up to 5 leaves, all going strong. The airflow and humidity around the roots is crucial.

Lindsey, what is Pon? I’m new to plants and would like to know since it helped so much.

Hey! PON in this case is lechuza PON which is a brand of essentially lava rocks and other rocks mixed together! It’s used is semi hydro setups similarly to LECA if you have used. I’ve never used PON before but my Frydek has me tempted lol

Thank you for your explanation. I was thinking about using LECA but worried that I would mess it up. Just starting to take care of plants at the old age of 60! Always loved outside plants and now doing indoor plants.
