Goodafternoon Planta community, Just planted some rudbeckias and a few shastas , They were on sale from seasonal at Home Depot, this is already week 1. I had pruned what I could to save them, but it’s starting discoloration to the root day by day. Am I overwatering or they are just too sick? I did a cow manure and topping soil mixture to help.

What type of soil do you have? How fast does it drain? The soil looks pale like it has too much sand or clay. It may need additional materials such as compost, fine mulch, perlite, vermiculite, commercial garden soil to break up the soil’s texture giving it the right amount of drainage and organic matter. Also, did you till the soil, remove debris, rocks, metal parts or anything detrimental to the growth of the plant. Rusty metals adds too much iron. Copper stops root growth. What’s the Ph level of the soil? The soil’s Ph level can affect the plants. They have Ph test kits for soil in stores. The results will determine if the soil needs additives to change the Ph. Additionally, the cement and water runoff from that block wall can change the soil’s Ph. Most state’s Agricultural Extension Services will test the soil and recommend additives to balance the Ph when you send a soil sample. Check online. 🍀🪴

Hello sunny, I will be looking into what kind of soil I have, as for now I do think I have clay, 80 sand 50 clay, based on this pyramid chart that I don’t know how to read. I went ahead and plowed before planting, added steer manure and Home Depot garden green bag top soil. I then placed 50/50 in a 2 foot hole as I repotted. They are now 2 weeks in ground , I will also be trying extra hard to get out what so it’s pure soil rather than having rocks and etc. Recently have been spreading cow steer and topping soil over all my yard and watering daily, Texas heat will not win lol. Thank you greatly for letting me know what I could do to ensure a healthy and green plants :p, Will update, -AH
