Hello, I need help. I have a 8ft fiddle leaf fig. It was doing so well and out of the blue i started noticing mealybugs. I have treated it with everything i can think of, i have even checked the soil. There are no bugs in the soil, just on the leaves, now all my leaves are falling off and turning brown. How can I save it? I have used captain jack’s insecticidal spray, i’ve used neem oil with fungicides & insecticide, copper spray, rubbing alcohol, peppermint oil / tea tree oil castile soap mix, nothing seems to work. can anyone give me a good recommendation? I would hate to throw the plant out because i put so much work into it.

First of all you need to remove it from the other plants, because they could be infected and case it to go back and forth. I would replant in different soil and wipe the leaves. I hope this helped

Thank you for your advice. I will try moving it away from my other plants. Its so heavy to move. But i rather try moving it because the bugs could be going in between my plants. And thats probably why I cant get rid of them.

Hey there. You don’t have to repot but you do need to go in with a systemic. I usually don’t even recommend repotting at all when a ficus is sad because usually, repotting will make it worse. Get something with systemic power and something natural and OIL based. I like bonide systemic granules or their systemic concentrate. Either will work but it takes 2 weeks to kick in. During that time, you need an oil based product to smother them. I like mitex by bonide but you can also use neem oil. This is mostly to control the adults and kill them as you see them. These products ONLY WORK BY CONTACT AND HAVE NO RESIDUAL EFFECT. Fungicides won’t do anything because it’s a bug and not a fungus. Peppermint and tree oil won’t kill fast enough. Captain jacks (spinosad) only works if they consume it.

Cut it in half, wash trunk and roots. Start fresh in new soil and cleaned pot. It’s getting too tall anyways

I definitely don’t want to cut it. I have already done that last year. When it was outside I had to get on a ladder and cut it. It grew past my house while it was outside. It was 15ft tall. Its now 8ft. Besides i will be moving it soon into a greenhouse that can allow it to take off to what ever size it wants to grow too. But I have to get it back to being healthy again first before i do anything. Thank you for your advice.

The issue is that new leaves wont grow on old wood, but on its end, which is basically at the ceiling where they’ll have far from enough light.

There’s bugs that eat them I’m pretty sure, those bugs and the treatment could maybe get them away?

I looked into buying some lady bugs. Maybe I can release them in my plant room and see what happens

Might fly all over your room but it’s worth a try! I’d be so scared to squash one which was chilling in my bed while I slept 🫣
