So I recently got this ponytail palm from target. And all its leaves have rotted off for some reason. I had one before and it thrived :-( Is this plant a lost cause now ?

i’m not sure if it’s a lost cause i would still keep an eye on it for a while. but as someone who works at target, don’t ever buy target plants😭i have no idea who takes care of them and they almost always look so bad

The ones I saw at target looked like no one took care of them.🤪 Some were crunchy like they had been put in an oven. I did buy a pothos and a brasil philodendrona couple months ago, but treated it as a rescue plant. Dumped them out, cut off dead parts, separated out the separate plants into different pots to customize care, and fertilized them. They are doing great now! But I have no idea why someone thought it was a good idea to sell plants at a store indoors on the shelf with no water or light, like a vase or something. I felt bad for the workers who were responsible for that section. Target is not set up for plants.🤪

pull it out of the pot and get eyes on the root system so you can start trying to figure out why the leaves fell off

my guess is that the soil sucks and needs to be updated to something better & more well draining

All good signs! It could have dropped leaves from stress of the move from the store to your home and/or results of poor care previously. I’d get it into some nice new, quick draining sandy soil mix & give it time to adjust to its new conditions at your house and it should start popping out new leaves. a little fertilizer wouldn’t hurt either
