My mother in law gave me her corn plant to try and revive it. There’s a lot of damage though and Planta says it’s inconsistent watering. She did just about everything wrong you can to a plant (bless her heart.) ie moved it, under ac/ heater, moved again, root bound etc I let it sit outside in shade/ indirect light. It has fungus gnats. Just watered with peroxide and added peppermint oil for bugs. She says it has drainage wholes (she just repotted) but I soaked it and no water came out. I was hesitant to do so as my meter said the base was damp. Any advice as I’ve never cared for a dracanea. Is it too far gone?

dracaena’s i believe are semi-succulents. and if that’s incorrect, i still treat mine the same as my succulents anyways. except i dust/clean mine more with neem oil because my cat loves to nudge against it :) they like a well draining soil with minimal retention, i have mine in the Sol Soils chunky mix. Not quite the succulent mix, just slightly more retention. I also just switched it over to a nursery pot inside of a decorative pot from being in a ceramic one with a single tiny drainage hole. to me this looks like too much water retention in the soil along with the sub-par environment. i water mine about once a month indoors under a grow light. increased heat and real sun exposure might push you to every 3 weeks.

Thank you. I’ll look at changing the soil as I’m sure they grabbed whatever they could find haha her issue is her house is very dark and the window she had it in was too close to the range i.e. heat and oil I just don’t want to do too much too fast for this already stressed plant. That’s why I’m keeping it in shade outside so when I give it back hopefully that’s where it will thrive

Yes. I glanced at your profile and I saw you have snake plants. They are very similar care-wise. The corn plants just grow slower. It’s my oldest plant of 1 year and has given me 2 mature leaves, and there’s maybe 3 on the way currently. And here is my boy 🤭 *technically* a tuxedo because he has 4 little white hairs on his chest 🐈‍⬛

Make sure to use rainwater for watering purposes …. Dracaena are sensitive to tap water.

lol fair enough. Distilled is also an option but some people object to the cost and environmental impacts. It’s the fluoride in the water that they plant is sensitive too, so it may not even affect you if your municipality/town doesn’t fluoridate the tap water.

I agree with S.R. I filter my drinking water and use that to water.

We have an RO system so maybe that helps?
