Sassafras

Hi everyone, I think I may have killed my basil🫣 I’ve been growing it outside (New England area) and it was thriving. Then I tried harvesting some of the basil. I watched videos online telling me to cut off some of the stalks above the node and trimmed it down some. Since then, it’s been turning brown and dropping leaves. There are still a few green stalks on the plant, but they’re all growing out of brown stalks. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Is there any hope for her, or is she definitely dead?

I looked it up because I wanted to know why too. This is what I found from Google ai. Are any of these possibilities?

Possibly, though I’m pretty sure I must have damaged it when pruning. It was thriving before I trimmed it, but after I harvested some of the stalks it started dropping leaves like crazy and browning. There haven’t been any changes to the weather or it’s watering schedule either

They don’t last forever. Mine always grows best next to other plants — tomatoes especially. The support allows it to grow extra limbs. You should also be pruning before it flowers. Plants like this will put all the energy into the production of flowers. You should pinch those off when then start forming - they’ll look like tight clusters of tiny leaves to start -that’s the best pruning for basil this also appears to be lacking sufficient light — basil wants full sun

Thank you, I kept putting off cutting it cause I didn’t know what to do with the basil and didn’t want to waste it🤦‍♀️ ah well, live and learn

It bolted, produced flowers and eventually, seeds. You waited to long to cut it. You can and should cut herbs throughout growing season. You have to cut them as soon as you see flower buds. Pinch off the flower buds and one or two sets of large leaves at the base of the flower buds. The point is to block all the flower growth as long as possible.

So true! That’s why I’m not growing basil plants this year. I love the varieties from Italy and especially Asia because they are so sweet scented. I couldn’t keep up with them.

Hmm it looks like it has bolted and made seeds and is now ending its life cycle. You could try snipping off all the flowers (you shouldn’t let basil form flowers because it makes the basil bitter tasting and it makes the plant focus on flowers and seeds and not growing more leaves). It might be a goner but you might be able to save it. Also when you harvest make sure you only take about 1/3 of the plant at any time.
