My first spider plant. It was really great when it arrived (bought off planta). I waited about two weeks and repotted. Potting soil/perlite 2:1 and lyca layer on bottom. It’s been about a week since repot and it is getting very brown leaves at the end. It seems random and newer growth looks better, so maybe it’s still just adjusting? It had some good babies too that died off and wishing I had made cuttings with. I def overwatered first week as well. Possibly not enough sun either. Water is distilled and good. I’ve been trimming the brown and let it dry out this week, doing a bottom water tonight. Moved it to living room with more light as well. Thinking I also may have went too big on pot, which is a frequent mistake of mine. But don’t want to repot yet again and stress it out if thats the case right? It was in four inch and very crowded, but I went up to like an 8. Any tips or guidance (especially if it’s leave it alone đŸ€Ł) are very welcome!

    That pot is too big for that plant. I have over 50 plants and I’ve learned to never repot a plant until roots are coming out of the bottom. When you purchase a plant, it will come in a perfect medium. I usually go only up 2 inches in a pot. And some plants like to be snug in their pot. It may have not been as crowded as previously thought. Your plant will survive in that pot. It won’t grow a lot because the largeness of the pot means that the plant will spend time growing roots to fill up the space in the pot. Lastly, purchase a water meter for the soil. It’s a life saver and it costs only $7 on Amazon!

    I agree that I would repot back into a more appropriately sized planter. It’s worth the little bit of stress now to prevent it dying completely from overwatering. You want to make sure the pot is no more than 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball of the plant. You want to wait to water the plant when the soil is 50% dry. I recommend checking the soil with a chopstick (same as if you’re checking for a cake to be done- stick the chopstick in and see if it comes out dry) or moisture meter before watering again. Just stick it 50% down into the soil and if it comes out dry, go ahead and water thoroughly, but if it comes out damp at all then you should wait a couple days and check again (I just hit snooze for 2 days on Planta).

    It’s going to continue to die if you do nothing. You shouldn’t repot right after buying a plant. Wait about a month unless the plant arrived with issues that require an immediate repot to fix. The plant needs to acclimate to the new environment. It’s under stress until it does. Repotting adds additional stress because the roots get damaged in the process. Repotting to a too big pot adds more stress from the soil holding excess water on the roots causing rot. Overwatering adds more stress because the soil is still wet when more water is added. Moving it to different locations in your home adds more stress from the lighting/temp/humidity changes. Your plant is fighting for its life. 😁 I recommend a downsize to the original size of the pot it came in. Put it back into a 4 inch pot if it arrived in a 4 inch pot. Repot when there are more roots than soil like in my photo. You have to take off the pot and look at the roots. Roots sticking out the bottom like in the little red pot in my picture is not necessarily a sign of being root bound. The excess roots on the red pot is from it sitting in a ceramic outer pot with no drain holes. Essentially, it is in water like a propagation. I cut those off and moved it to get drainage and the roots never came back. Also, spider plants like a tight pot. They don’t like a lot of extra soil surrounding their roots. These two plants have been in the same pots over two years. They are growing bigger. But, the size is limited. đŸȘŽđŸ€
