I need some help with my beloved variegated Hoya compacta. It was on my plant stand under the grow light that came with the stand, far away from a north facing window. I used Planta’s recommended watering schedule as a guideline of when to check the pot for dryness and would only water if the bamboo stick was dry. Fast forward to the last 2-3 weeks. I noticed the bottom leaves keep yellowing and then shriveling up. I looked at the roots - they were fine, but the soil seemed compacted at the bottom, so I put the repotted in a nursery pot with soil mix that drains well. I also moved it to my north facing windowsill. Unfortunately, none of the seems to be helping as I noticed two more leaves yellowing. Checked the root ball again today, seems fine. No pests seen either. Does it need a grow light with higher wattage? Need different soil? Something else? With fall quickly approaching, I know the natural Sunlight will decrease in my home, so I want to get this taken care of.

Check for pests!!! if none, check for any fungal issues. some plants can be fussy and only want natural light. grow lights and the sun aren't the same. you may have to find her a new spot. it could also be under watering, or the leaves that are dropping were in contact with the soil and getting too wet if you were top watering, which made them rot.

it could also be hungry!!! have you fertilized in a while, if ever? plants get nutrient deficient too!

The north window is too dark. The plant will live but won’t thrive. An east window is good for direct sunlight and higher chance of blooming. A south window with sheer curtains as a light diffuser works too. Move the grow light to within a foot of the plant to see if it improves. Light intensity drops off exponentially for lights further away from the plants. Sansi and Barrina have better grow lights and they can be pricey. But, they work. Definitely, fertilize (at least once a month), as recommended by Plantgeek. Diluted fertilizer twice a reduces the risk of fertilizer burn. I add SuperThrive Plant Vitamins to the fertilizer water. Swirl Mosquito Bits granules in the water every time to kill off the fungus gnats for good. 🪴🍀

Thank you both. It looks like I haven’t fertilized it since July, but will definitely do so with my next watering. Unfortunately, I can’t move them to my South window, but will look into better quality grow lights which all my plants would probably benefit from.
