hi all! I have a bunch of outside potted plants and I've had such a problem with ants nesting in my pots. im at my wits end with them!!! I've tried treating the areas with cinnamon, and when that didnt work, I sprayed diluted vinegar all around the affected areas to disrupt their pheromones. however they are still terrorizing my potted plants! any and all input is welcome (*^▽^)/★*☆♪

I use Spectracide Ant granules for the outside garden and potted plants when fire ants take over. The ants take it into the nest as food. The entire mound dies off in less than 24 hours. Read the hazards and cautions. I would not use it on plants coming into the house because it’s an insecticide and the scent is strong to it from being eaten by pets and children.

thank you! I've hesitated to use insecticide on them because most of my plants are around my porch and I dont want runoff to affect my dog. I might just have to bite the bullet though!

I’m no expert but I when I’ve had any problems with ants they’ve been the secondary issue. There was always a primary pest issue that drew the ants to them. Sorry, what a pain. 😠

thank you for your perspective! I've noticed the ants in my yard are just extremely bad. earlier in the summer we even had some come inside! in your case, what was attracting the ants?

There were thrips (I think) in the roots of my viburnum and the other was a case of mealy bugs eating at my japonica which secreted some tasty “sap” that attracted the ants. So, in one case the ants were eating the root bugs and the other they were attracted to the sap. Now when I see them I take it as a sign to look a little closer.

I could be wrong about the thrips but it was some kind of pest in the roots. We have fire ants in our area but they leave my plants alone.

I have fire ants. They come inside through the weep holes in the base bricks. I also have larger tree ants and minuscule sugar ants that love the nectar from my hoyas in bloom. They pollinate my hoyas. So, I leave them alone. Fire ants are demons. I have to clear them mostly for my dogs. 🪴🍀

At the greenhouse I work at, we use Castile soap mixed with peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle!
