I have had three battles with aphids this spring including both green and orange aphids. They are all within an area both inside and outside my kitchen window. I got so tired that I just used insecticide which I usually try to avoid because it takes out beneficial insects as well. But, It works and is the last option before tossing out the plant. It’s a Hoya Gigantanganesis in a 4 inch pot I bought 10 months ago.

I had an aphid infestation on my ornamental onions early spring. I used Bonide insecticidal soap once and it wiped them out. I mention this because it supposedly targets the pests while doing less harm to the beneficials. How’s your Hoya after the treatment?

I’ve only used insecticides on these Hoyas: Bella, Krohniana super silver, Nummularoides and this Gigantanganesis. I saw no side effects. I try to avoid using it since I have lots of frogs, lizards and beneficial insects including bees.

I used systemic granules in the soil. You can sprinkle them on top and water them in. Helps with aphids, never had a problem with it. Try that! $10 online

Bonide systemic granules have carcinogens that affect lungs. My husband got lung cancer early in our marriage and it took his life. I don’t recommend using system granules before fully understanding the risks documented in the company’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Oh gosh, now I’m scared. Are you suggesting his cancer came from the granules? (Not being mean, just genuinely curious). I want to be as safe as possible and don’t want this to happen 😰

No, I’m not say he got cancer from Bonide. I’m saying to carefully research and read the cautions and EPA warnings listed on the label. You can google Bonide granules MSDS (materials safety data sheet) that describes the chemicals in this product that cause lung cancer. The instructions state to use personal protective equipment (PPE), gloves and masks, etc., when applying it to potted plants. Then, you live in your house with it! I had a husband and brother-in-law both die from lung cancer. I’m saying know what you expose yourself to and the risks you are taking for yourself, your family and your pets.

I would use neem oil for aphids. I use it on all my plants or you could give it a dawn dish soap bath at 1 tbs per 7 gallon of water and dunk the whole pot for a couple seconds at most. Also Make sure soil is not dry before you treat

I don’t like the oil on the plants or the smell of neem oil. I have used Dawn soapy dishwater a few times and they return. I have completely immersed them in Dawn soapy water for several hours. The aphids came back a couple of months later. So, I’m using insecticide as a last resort.
