Hey earthlings! I have a miniature moth orchid who can’t seem to grow a fourth leaf! Every time a knew leaf comes another falls off. Also some of the roots on the surface do not look healthy but the leafs look awesome! Any tips or suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks you guys!

It looks like some of the roots may be rotting 😬. How often do you water? Does it have good drainage?

The drainage is good, yes. I’m not sure if it’s something for be worried about or just the plant simply not using those roots anymore..

I think you should definitely look into it, the roots shouldn’t be a dark brown as in the picture, are they mushy or have a bad smell?

I usually water 1 a week/2 weeks I wonder if the roots are just old?

Once a week is most likely too much, I water mine whenever the roots have a silver color to them, maybe once every few weeks?

Yes, I just watered it after 2 weeks of not, I did see that the biggest brown root was not in the soil and just sorta hanging out of the pot. Maybe that is the problem. Do you have any idea as to why he can’t grow more leaves?

I’d remove the dead roots and just check that you have some good greens ones, I suspect you do because your leaves look good. I have an orchid that only ever has 4 or 5 leaves at a time, always dropping one as a new one comes in and she’s happily blooming year after year. I keep a layer of damp sphag moss on top to promote roots & soak the pot for about 10-15 minutes about once a week. Healthy roots turn silver when they’re ready to be watered, and should be a light green when properly hydrated
