Fertiliser balls, if fungal gnat larvae were that big I’d probably throw my plants out lol

Plant dad for a year here—In my experience with gnats, I always notice them just after I water my plant. The little larvae rise to the surface of the soil so they don't drown! If you shine a light on the soil they'll shimmer a bit as the move about (kinda silvery looking). I don't obsessively look at the soil unless I'm actively treating a plant that's infested, in which case I'll quarantine the plant then monitor the soil after every water for about a month (average lifespan of a gnat). But in your case I hope you never have to deal with them! 😄

Someone said they remove two inches of dirt before watering than put the dirt back on top which is actually smart since gnats can’t lay eggs in dry soil and never bury their eggs deeper than 2 inches
