I recently repotted mine for the same reason. It had lost a lot of its lower leaves and was getting top heavy. I repotted it in a slightly bigger pot with the bald stem in the dirt. I also lobbed off the top in hopes of propagating. Sadly the top didn’t make it (I’m sure it was user error), but the OG plant is doing good and has a new little baby plant growing where I cut it. Looks a little odd, but healthy!

Thank you! That is a shame your propagation didn’t make it but im glad the OG plant is doing well!

The roots have rotted. Cut off the stem until you are into healthy tissue. Throw out that soil. Repot into proper succulent/cactus soil. Available at Amazon or diy with recipes online. If you have other succulents and want to invest into good soil, try Jacks Gritty Mix. Add about 10% regular potting soil to it. The stem can callous over while you order or make your mix. Remove some bottom leaves so that you have some stem to place into the new soil. Water sparingly using a squeeze bottle to water at the stem. Do not water the entire pot. After roots form, you can start watering properly. I recommend shallow terracotta planters. They are porous and help avoid overwatering. Frequent watering created the root rot. Lots of very bright light and totally dry soil before watering. Lower leaves drying up is normal. If they are translucent and then drop, that’s overwatering.

Thank you! I never even knew that the soil was incorrect. It’s been in this type of soil for years too so I am sure it’s long overdue for the proper mix. Thanks for your help!

Time to chop and prop(agate)! Once it gets leggy, I chop it right under the top growth and replant it, and also repot the stem and roots into new soil!
