My neighbor gifted me a beautiful umbrella plant today, however upon further inspection, I noticed it is covered in scale. I immediately sprayed it down with the hose outside and picked off what I can see by hand and used paper towels to wipe both sides of the leaves. Then i spray neem oil all over the plant and will leave it outside for the next few days. Please give me any tips and tricks you have to get rid of this as fast as possible. This is the first time I have dealt with any plant pests. I also cut off badly yellowed or spotted leaves & the ones that were very infested.

Scale is so annoying! But luckily fixable. You already took the right first step by spraying it down with the hose outside. You can remove any remaining scale by rubbing a q-tip soaked in alcohol over them. A toothbrush would also work! I’d maybe rinse the plant off again after doing that just to wash off any remaining rubbing alcohol- you can cover the pot with saran wrap or something to prevent anything from falling into the soil. Neem oil is a great pest preventative, so it’s good to keep using, but it won’t treat an active infestation. I’d recommend an insecticidal soap (check to see that it can treat scale) that you spray thoroughly on every inch of the plant and on the top layer of soil 1x/week for 4 weeks to cover the full life cycle. When you spray the plant, make sure to keep it away from direct sunlight while it dries to prevent leaf scorch. I’d also recommend keeping it inside (less likely to get more pests from outdoors) but quarantined in a different room from any other plants to prevent spreading. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response! I did not cover the soil when I was spraying it down, so hopefully nothing fell in. I did look up insecticidal soap, and it says it may not work on scale because it is a hard shell pest. I did bring it into the house so I don’t get outdoor bugs. I have it on the opposite side of a room from my other plants because I don’t have much space for it hopefully continual spraying and wiping can get rid of it soon! 🤞🏼
