Hi all, I hope someone can help me with this poor plant. It has been struggling since the day I got it. It's had two new leaves, but two died along with them and these leaves something is up with them. Any help would be so appreciated. I'm about ready to toss it. Plants are supposed to be fun right?

don’t give up just yet!!! if anything at all, you could cut the leaves off entirely and start fresh from the stem. i know alocasias are so finicky i’ve killed mine within 2 months of having it 😅 but later i watched videos of others just cutting the base off the stem entirely and have seen new growth points grow from the node. don’t make my mistake and throw it before you try starting fresh, it could save your plant :)

There are three potential causes fpr that kind of damage. A, it's overwatered and may need treatment for root rot (alocasias like frequent watering, so it's easy to overdo it. Good drainage and a tighter than average pot fit help.) B, they're sensitive to chemicals and may not like something in your water. C, they're sensitive to inconsistent watering and would like a very steady schedule

Alocasias are so hard! I consider myself pretty good with plants at this point, but this is definitely the most difficult plant for me to grow. I’m still learning how to take care of them but just treating it as my next plant challenge to overcome. I’ve been learning a lot about Alocasia care on Youtube from The Jungle Haven, The Leafy Diva, and Paige Tailyn. For my alocasia that is in a potting mix like yours (it looks super chunky and well draining- nice!), I water it as soon as that top layer is dry. They also love humidity so giving it a humidifier would probably be ideal if you can spring for one. I also make sure it has plenty of bright indirect light (had to add a grow light to mine) but yours looks like it may be struggling with underwatering more than light based on the leaves.

I haven’t noticed mine struggling with regular tap water, but my tap water quality is also really good. If you think it may be a water quality issue, you could try distilled water. However, my educated guess is that it’s struggling with some underwatering/inconsistent watering more than the water quality itself, based on the way the leaves are yellowing and browning.

Thank you for all your suggestions. It does have a grow light and it's next to a humidifier. I use filtered water and add Houseplant tapwater conditioner to it as well just to be sure. I do have a habit of letting pretty much all of my plants go fairly dry before watering because I'm so afraid of overwatering. So underwater could be the issue. I will try and improve on that. Thank you so much.

In that case, I would agree with you that it’s probably underwatered. Good luck!
