Fairly new to planting here. I have what I believe to be a “sweet heart vine” and it looks like it’s been overwatered and could possibly have root rot?? If so can I save it? 🤞🏽🥺❤️‍🩹 Pleeeease help! To add it was it a 4 in nursery and when I went to repot that’s when I noticed some roots didnt look so great and the base of the plant didn’t look right. I can also answer any additional questions if I didn’t include enough info.

This is a Hoya Carnosa KRIMSON PRINCESS. The sweetheart vines associated with hoyas are Hoya Kerii whose leaves are heart shaped. Trim off all the soft mushy rotten roots. Rinse the roots and tools in hydrogen peroxide to disinfect. Disinfect the old pot if you plan to reuse it. The damage area on the stem could be a problem if it’s rotten. First option: 1) I’m guessing it’s a bruise and not rot based on the condition of the leaves. I would disinfect and plant the whole plant in chunky soil mix. Second option: 2) Treat as a rotted stem. Try to save the upper portion above the damaged stem by cutting assuming the stem is rotting. I would cut above the lowest leaf if that was rot. Then, propagate the upper portion in water a couple of months. See the pic. You have determine if the stem damage is a bruise or rot. The leaves are showing healthy. I would plant it as-is after cleaning and disinfecting assuming it’s not rot. 🍀🍀🍀

Thank you!! You are totally right! It is a Krimson Princess. What’s the best way to determine a bruise from rot? I want to be sure I don’t confuse one for the other and end up propagating if I don’t really need to. 🥲😅

It’s harder to tell unless the section goes soft and bendy. I would just plant all of it without cutting and see if the stem blackens or the leaves yellow. It should stop rotting since the decaying roots will be cut off. Just keep watching it. Plant in a chunky soil mix Standard potting mix is too dense for hoyas.
