I just got this snake plant a 2 weeks ago and the edges were all green, and hearing that they don’t need much water. However, every week I pick up the pot feels very light. I’ve top watered the first time and bottom watered the second time. I checked the roots and there seems to be growth and it’s not mushy, but is this showing signs of thirst or too much water. I picked this one up from Lowe’s and it was drenched in water. Been giving it enough sun and room temp is around 70-72.

I think it’s fine that the pot is light, it means it’s dried out but that’s what these plants are used to. I think of it like them living in a desert - it’s going to dry out completely and then there will be an occasional deluge of rain to drench it. I follow Planta’s watering schedule for mine and it’s thriving and shooting out loads of new leaves and pups. I’ve accidentally left it for over a month with no water and it has been fine. When I do water it, I water it very, very thoroughly, usually soaking it in a bowl for 20 minutes or so.

So even if it’s light, do I just ignore it for a while? I’m just worried that these dry edges means it’s been thirsty as it did absorb pretty quickly when I bottom watered. The centers have been growing very fast and fine.

It looks to me as though the edges are softening through overwatering rather than drying out. The water being absorbed quickly just means that the soil is thirsty rather than the plant itself. The fact it’s been growing in the centre is a good sign! See what Planta has to say about frequency and try and give it a little longer between waterings and you’ll both be fine I’m sure! ☺️

Got the plant 2 weeks ago and it was drenched, and you’ve watered twice since? Definitely too much! I water mine monthly

Ah, I see! Would the edges being dry be because I’ve been watering too much? The babies in the middle are green and growing. I stick my finger each week and the soil is usually around 90% dry except around roots in middle.
