What’s wrong with my orchid?
What’s your soil medium?
2 J'aimeMaybe overwatered? I’d check soil drainage, root health, and rip off the yellowed leave
0 J'aimeI would move it to a clear container, then you could see if it needs watering or not. Green roots meant it has plenty of water, and silver roots mean it needs to be watered. Cut off the yellow leaf and the soil looks dry.
3 J'aimeLooks like underwatering based on it being a pale yellow color, the soil looking pretty dry in the photo, and it being one of the oldest leaves that’s affected first. I’d move it into a clear pot in an orchid bark mix so you can see the roots and water when the roots turn silver. While repotting it, you can cut off any dead parts of the roots with clean scissors if there are any. Cut the leaf off with clean scissors (don’t just rip it off; this can injure the plant) and it should bounce back just fine!
2 J'aimeTotally wrong soil medium, which might cause root rot/suffocate the roots. Orchids are epiphytes, so in the wild they'd cling to trees with no soil. They like to have their roots watered directly, and to fully dry out between waterings. In its current soil, you want to water thouroughly to make sure the roots actually touch moisture, but you'll also need to make sure the soil fully drains (stagnant water, especially at the tips of the roots, is a recipe for rot.) You want to repot into proper orchid bark as soon as possible (it might bother the new flower spike and shorten the bloom time, but it's better to risk this bloom than to risk the orchid's life. Just try to be gentle with the roots when repotting.) Since the soil is currently dry, it should shake/crumble off the roots fairly easily. Remove as much as you can without forcing it, then wash off the rest of the soil and soak the roots for 20 minutes to an hour to help make them flexible (soaking will also help revive any live but dehydrated roots so you can tell them apart from dead ones.) When potting, make sure the crown (where all the leaves meet) sits above the bark so it won't get wet during watering. Trim off that yellow leaf. (You'll probably lose the lowest two green ones as it recovers; as long as it makes new ones, you're good)
6 J'aimeWrong potting medium. And very dehydrated.
