A lot of fern roots are brown to black in color. Crispy wave fern roots are brown in color. A good indicator of root rot is smell. Rotting roots smell bad and not like fresh dirt.

Such a horrible smell! Sometimes it can be hard to tell when rot is starting on a plant that has black or brown roots to begin with… when in doubt the smell test is key!

After you remove the rotting roots, make sure you spray the remaining roots with hydrogen peroxide to kill any bacteria that may remain

Straight peroxide won’t hurt them, just put it in a spray bottle.

It also looks like you have mealy bugs! I would smash the bugs with a q tip soaked in rubbing alcohol or neem oil. Also wipe down all the leaves with rubbing alcohol or water neem oil mix
