Hi y’all. Hoping someone can help me out here. My potho’s is slowing loosing its green. Some leaves are yellowing, while others almost have a brownish tint to them. I have lost a few leaves at this point, usually when I’m checking for bugs, the leaves come right off without much touch. Not sure the issue. It sits about 2ish metres from the window and sits in a west facing window and gets plenty of indirect sunlight. I got the plant at the beginning of November and it’s been watered one (last week). I have noted some thrips but I’ve sprayed the plant down with water with neem and dish soap a few times along with adding that to the roots in hopes of getting rid of the bugs. Anyone have any idea of what could have caused this or what I can do to prevent the rest of the leaves from yellowing and falling off. The camera didn’t really pick up the browning of the leaves

    Speaking from personal experience, If it’s still in the soil that it came from in the store, I would probably go ahead and repot it into some chunky, well draining soil and check for the health of the roots, especially if it came from a big box store like Lowe’s/Home Depot/Walmart since they have a tendency to overwater and give their plants root rot. If you see any mushy/dead/rotting roots, trim them away with some clean scissors, spray with 3% hydrogen peroxide, and then repot into a well-draining potting mix like a cactus soil mix in a pot that’s no more than 1-2 inches bigger than the size of the root ball. If the oldest leaves are the ones drying off, that can be normal- especially with all the stress of living and having thrips. You can trim them off and keep monitoring! I’d keep treating for thrips just like you have once a week for 4 weeks to be safe if you’re not already doing that to make sure to cover their full life cycle. Pothos can be very hardy and bounce back from a lot. Worst case scenario, you can always chop it and prop it, but I think you’ll see it bounce back.     The oily looking leaves looks like either edema or it was exposed to temperatures outside its tolerable range which can damage cells. Edema is from the roots sending too much water to the leaf and stems. It gives off an oily look. That can also cause yellowing if there is too much water in the soil too long. It’s unusual to only water a pothos once in 4 weeks for a pot that size. I’m assuming the soil was still wet. So, you skipped watering. If so, then, the pot may be too big. The roots can’t quickly use up all the water in the soil. A plant getting too hot or too cold can get those translucent oily looking leaves. Exposure to cold temperatures on the drive home can quickly damage plants in minutes. Plants too close to a drafty window or near forced air heaters can also damage plants.

      Would all this be applicable even if only some leaves were discoloured not all? That’s what im having trouble understanding because it’s only select few leaves. Since posting this, I’ve seen more leave turn yellow without falling off

      It’s more likely edema from overwatering when healthy looking leaves are still turning yellow. Also, overwatering can come from watering too often. Don’t follow a strict watering schedule. Always check the soil is dry with a wooden meat skewer like checking a cake is baked. Dry soil won’t make the stick damp. Plants can look overwatered if the pot is too big with excess soil. Excess soil holds excess water that the plant can’t use up. The roots sit in water too long and rot. Poor drainage or no drainage holes in the pot has the same effect. Low light can cause yellowing leaves. But, you typically don’t get the oily look on the leaves. Under watering can cause yellow leaves. But, you don’t see the oily looking edema effect on a dehydrating plant. Too much fertilizer can cause yellowing as well as hard water or water with too much chlorine if the plant is sensitive.
