Ewwww. About 3 weeks ago my peperomia needed to be repotted so I rinsed off the roots, made it really really nice and put it in a bigger pot with some kind of low quality soil and now there are these little flies everywhere all over it. What do I do? The only soil I have available now is tropical soil. Would that work? I’m not overwatering.☹️

They look like gnats, they love wet soil and usually cheaper bags of soil are infected when you buy them. I have no tips bc I’m also struggling with them😭

Make a mixture of 1/4 hydrogen peroxide with water. Water with this mixture. OR Also get. A bag of mosquito bits And mix it like directions say on bag. This will kill the knats. Isolate this plant from any other plants. Maybe take plant outside till you can get rid of the knats. Don’t use cheap potting mixes ever. Even miracle grow sometimes is infected.

Will tropical soil help with the drainage?

      I’ve never heard of that.

Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water is the cheapest easiest way to get rid or gnat larva I. Soil. You can’t kill the live knats but you can kill their eggs with peroxide water. Knats don’t live long so there is hope.

Adult fungus gnats. Their larvae and eggs thrive in continuously wet soil. You may not be overwatering. But, your soil’s ability to dry out can’t keep up with your watering routine. You need to either change to a better draining and faster drying soil. You can also wait to water when the soil dries down more.

Will a tropical soil mix do the trick?

For peperomia, you need succulent/cactus soil.

My condolences. Only way to really prevent this is to go soil less I hear.

I have had success using neem cake to create neem tea to disrupt their life cycle. I use it on all my house plants and it helps to fertilize plants as well. Unfortunately it doesn’t get ride of mature flies but I use sticky UV light traps for those. The bud thing is to kill the. Off BEFORE they mature and treating the soil this ways is a long-term solution.

I use “microbe bio lift “ from Amazon and add 1-2 drops per 2 gallon container when I water my “ soil” plants and it has reduced them to almost none in just a month or so. I have also put most of my anthuriums in pon so that helps too.
