Does anyone with a water softener struggle with their plants? Or is it just me...
I do not recommend soft water for plants. Soft water is depleted of minerals necessary for good plant growth.
0 J'aimeI got myself a rain barrel, and I used rainwater to water my plants.
0 J'aimeI got a reverse osmosis filter for exactly this reason-- where I am located, the water is very hard and I have a softener. It was expensive, but I think it was worth it.
0 J'aimeI have city water and I use a chlorine-reducer, specifically one for fish tanks. I don’t use nearly enough as a fish tank would, and my more finicky plants seem to enjoy it (I’m looking at you, Calathea). Jade is correct in that plants need minerals, and so using entirely mineral-deficient or distilled water would not keep a plant alive for a long period. But the minerals in our water, such as chlorine in the form of chloramine, are in such a high concentration that can negatively affect sensitive plants over time. And no, leaving water on your counter overnight does not do anything, despite what the forums say.
1 j'aimeI’m in AZ and have very hard water too. I use a fish tank conditioner as well and seem to be doing okay. I’m not a fan of having a water softener on the house, but considered it for my plants. I’m glad to hear now that it wouldn’t be a good idea!
0 J'aimeFor hard water the most I would do is a type of filter (the ones for drinking water, like the Pur brand). The conditioner has worked for me so far though with just tap water. It depends on how hard your water is also, I’ve had it so bad that it is just straight orange.
0 J'aimeMy African Violets all died after I installed a water softener
0 J'aimeI live in a hard water area, I have a few 2 litre bottles (old cola bottles) that I fill up and treat with a water conditioner which is designed for aquariums, adjusting the measurements accordingly. I then use this in a Brita water filter jug. I keep the bottles filled up then the water is room temperature. I'm not sure if that's a bit OTT but my plants are happy and healthy.
