Any ideas on the rust-like browning on the leaves of my ZZ plant? I always wait until he’s completely dry before watering. He is currently moist from about an inch below the surface all the way down, so he won’t need watering for awhile. Over the last couple of months, I’ve had a few stems where all the leaves turned yellow. In fact, the leaves are turning yellow on a stem right next to this one. The rest of the plant is beautiful and pumping out new growth constantly. He sits on a dresser in my bedroom that is about 6ft. from the intake vent. This is the only thing that I can think of that would be affecting the plant. I’ve never seen these reddish brown spots on a plant before, so I’m hoping someone can give me guidance.

6ft from a vent would be far enough away for sure, I would think. What type of soil is he in?

Feels and looks like succulent mix, but it’s been awhile, so I’m not totally sure.

These plants don’t need to be topped off the moment they dry. It’s a little better to leave it dry for a week before watering again. I’m on a 3 week schedule myself

True, it might help if you wait a little bit longer between waterings. Zz plants really dont need much attention at all.

What is the lightning situation. Low light plus moist soil can cause rot. I’d check the roots

Good point. He is in a pretty dark corner. I wonder if I should move him to a brighter spot while letting the soil dry out for a good while. I don’t really know how long he was dry to the bottom before I watered him last, so I may not have left him dry long enough.

if a whole stem is completely yellow, it’s likely that the rhizome for that stem is rotted

Wow! I didn’t know that was a thing. I knew I would get good info on here. I will check the roots this weekend.

On the bright side, the rest of the plant looks great so most likely you only have one or two sickly rhizomes. When you take a look at the roots, the rhizomes should look like potatoes - firm, light brown. If they’re squishy and black then it’s a goner, remove them from the pot. You can cut off the rot and propagate the stem and leaves, but it’ll take months for them to root. Best of luck! My own ZZ had a rough beginning with me overwatering it, but it’s made a comeback and is thriving now. Wishing the same for you!
