Hi guys! Very very very new plant parent here. Lots to learn and feeling occasionally overwhelmed. But this calathea has been just doing miserably since coming home. I’ve been lightly and slowly changing his conditions to see if he wants to positively respond to the changes, but he’s just getting worse and worse. Is it a lost cause, or is there something I am missing with this guy to help revive him?

Calatheas are fussy plants even for more experienced plant parents šŸ˜‡. It seems you are doing great, she’s beautiful! She is also a drama queen, lol, but typically they need indirect lighting. They burn easily in direct light. They also droop when they need water, when it’s night time, when they feel like it, just dramatic šŸ˜‚. Try moving it out of direct sun and see how she does. It will be trial and error until you learn her needs. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, I find some of the lighting guides to be a lot, the whole ā€œpart sun part shade.ā€ It’s currently getting 3-4 hours of sun in the morning, and then indirect light the rest of the day, but perhaps it’s too much I suppose.

A few possibilities. 1. Too much light. No direct sun but enjoys bright indirect light. 2. Low humidity causes leaves to curl and become dry around the edges. 3. Using tap water with high mineral content. Calatheas do best with R.O. water or distilled water. 4. Planter too big for root system. Just from the pic, I would best guess number 1.

      1) thanks! I’ll try a darker spot! 2) I recently got a humidifier, and have been starting to treat some of my higher humidity plants with it 3) We have been using distilled on this big guy only 4) the planter is big, yes, but it’s actually in a plastic planter that it was bought it, just placed inside the big boy! But thank you for all the suggestions, I’ll try and give it more humidity!

I made the same move when I first started out. Distilled water really helped me. If you’re in a dry area, a humidifier or pebble tray may also help.
