I just got this monstera about a month ago and I’ve been watering every 10 days as the person who sold it to me told me to. Can anyone help me understand what is wrong with this soil? It looks strange to me with the white stuff on it but I don’t know what that is. For context, I had to cut out 3 leaves from this monstera plant because they had black/brown spots with yellow circles around them and I read somewhere that that’s a sign of a fungus that can spread and the best way to make sure the whole plant doesn’t die is to cut it. I hope I did it correctly. I am brand new to plant life so I really need some help here! TIA!

I would suggest only watering when you feel the soil is dry, not on a timeline. My monstera will go several days past when even planta suggests and is thriving. I always do the finger in the soil, it’s not the cleanest but if you feel dampness when you do it you can wait a bit longer. Good luck!!

Thank you for the advice. I’ll follow that! Any idea about the soil btw? It looks like it’s rotting but I cannot tell

Looks like calcium/salt buildup but kinda hard to tell. Make sure there aren’t any creepy crawlies, mealy bugs also create a white “dust”.

It might be fungus in the soil which usually isn’t a big deal. If it bothers you, you could repot into a chunkier mix (orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, etc). Airflow can also help prevent fungus

Pull it from the pot. Check for rotten, soft and smelly roots since several leaves already turned yellow. Change out the soil, cut dead roots and disinfect the roots with hydrogen peroxide before repotting if you find rot. Place it in an area with 8 hours of very bright indirect light. It can take early morning or late afternoon direct sun. Water with SuperThrive plant vitamins to help boost new roots. 🍀🪴
